Period Sex: Disgusting Taboo or Divine Pleasure?

Everyone whispers about it, but few admit to it. Period sex! Wow, the ultimate taboo that stirs equal parts curiosity, disgust, and intrigue. Some call it messy and again DISGUSTING!. While others swear by the deep intimacy, and pain relief it brings. But what’s really going on? Is it time we stop shaming this natural part of our bodies and start owning our pleasure, blood and all? Or should we keep cringing in horror and express our distaste with the subject?

The Taboo We Dare Not Talk About

For many, period sex is a hard no. It’s “dirty,” “unhygienic,” or just plain “nasty.” These ideas aren’t new, they’re rooted deep in cultural and religious taboos that have told women for centuries that their bodies, when bleeding, are shameful or impure.

And yet, despite the stigma, studies show a surprising number of women actually do have sex during their periods. Estimates vary, but research suggests anywhere from 20% to 50% of women have engaged in period sex at least once. So why the disconnect between what people say and what people do? Because while the taboo is loud, human desire is louder.

Why Some Women Say Yes to Period Sex

While both men and women cringe at the sight or thought of even having period sex some truly indulge in the benefits they bring such as:

  • Pain Relief: During menstruation, your body releases endorphins, natural painkillers that can reduce cramps and discomfort. Sex and orgasm can increase these feel-good chemicals, easing period pain.

  • Increased Libido: Some women report heightened sexual desire during their periods thanks to hormonal shifts.

  • Emotional Connection: For couples, period sex can be a way to deepen intimacy and feel accepted and loved in every phase; blood and all. (Fun fact: I once read this dark romance novel where during sex(MFMM), one of the men took the FMC’s period blood and streaked it onto his face to show her how not disgusted he was. I never threw a book and screamed that loud before lmao.)

  • Natural Lubrication: Period blood actually acts as a natural lubricant, which can make sex feel smoother for some women and more pleasurable for the men (imagine that).

The Messy Reality and How to Deal

In my opinion the greatest oppositions to period sex often mention the blood, the smell, blood clots and overall the mess it would leave on the bed sheets. Because let’s face it, that’s quite an uncomfortable mix of fluids. However with simple preparation such as waterproof bedsheets or a dark colored towel and open communication, the act can be conceived without guilt, shame or self consciousness.

What About Safety?

It’s important to remember that period sex can carry a slightly higher risk of infection, both for partners and for women because the cervix is a bit more open during menstruation. Friendly reminder that it is possible for women to get pregnant while on their periods. Using condoms and maintaining hygiene can help minimize risks.

The Bottom Line: Your Body, Your Rules

The decision to have sex during your period is deeply personal. If you’re curious, listen to your body, communicate with your partner, and do what feels right for you. But most importantly? Let’s ditch the shame and also the act of casting shame onto others. Period sex is a common act carried out by two consenting humans in society. The more we talk openly about it, both the good, the bad, and the messy, the freer we become to own our pleasure on our own terms.
